During the pandemic, when everyone began baking to survive, one of my students offered me her century-old starter. Her great-grandmother in Missouri had started it over 100 years earlier.
I have guarded and loved the starter ever since, at one point incorporating it into another starter that was of more recent vintage, The results have grown enormously, to the point where I could no longer use all or the starter I had. Thus the Facebook post.
The response has been tremendous and overwhelming. All I wanted to do was share my extra sourdough. What I've discovered is that the world is still full of people who can come together in a community and goodness, even in these troubled times. Thank you for this adventure.
